Articles/Writing

In recent years I have written a number of articles for a popular tourist magazine in Greece, Inside the Mani. These include one on identifying the numerous species of snake prevalent in this region, one on creating a garden to attract butterflies and another on photographing lizards. The 2008 included some of my photographs of light patterns on the Messinian Bay and an article on the dangerous creatures to be found in the area. In the 2010 edition there was a photo-essay of the Rindomo Gorge.

Subsequent to a tour of South Africa in 2006, I wrote two articles accompanied by some of my photographs. These are synopses:

Impala - adaptations for success
This is an article about the dynamic nature of life with its continuous cycles of change and of life and death. The humble impala is used as an example species to illustrate some of the beauty that comes through evolutionary adaptations made to these stresses. It acknowledges the complex interrelationships between all animal and plant populations which are a necessary part of this process that we call 'Nature' and concludes with a question to ask ourselves about our own involvement in this process. The information comes largely from consulting Field Guides/Rangers at reserves in South Africa, Walter Mdluli at Timbavati in particular.

The Nile Crocodile - the ultimate survivor
This is an informative article on the plight of the Nile Crocodile based largely on an interview with Neal Martin, co-curator of the Khamai Reptile Park in South Africa. I set the scene with details on the remarkable adaptations that have enabled their design to stand the test of time. I go on to discuss aspects of their behaviour that provide evidence of a level of intelligence that exceeds most people's assumptions. This is illustrated by how Martin's crocodiles respond to verbal commands and exhibit individual personalities. I conclude by reporting on the current threat they face at the hand of mankind and how they are very worthy of our protection and further study.

In 2009 I published a coffee-table book entitled Light on the Mani. This is a 108 page, 10 x 8 hardback book of images from the remarkable Mani peninsula of the Peloponnese in Greece. Chapters cover the dramatic landscape, the unique village architecture with stone-built tower houses, various aspects of life in the region and its wildlife and wild flowers. Copies can be previewed and ordered from the bookstore at www.blurb.com. Clicking on the photo below will take you to the appropriate category in the bookstore. Simply type Richard Garvey-Williams in the Search option and it will take you to the book.

I am currently working on further magazine articles and a guide book for safari photography.
